Mtubatuba was once a railway siding which was en route between Thukela (Tugela) River and Golela on the Swaziland border. The village developed & grew with the introduction of the sugar plantation and the mill at Riverview.
Mtubatuba literally means: "he who was pummeled out!" being the local chief whose mother had difficulty with his birth. Now a burgeoning business area of the Hlabisa district.
